Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Walsh, Nooth, Cavendish, Franklin, Watson, Wilson, Barrington, and others. The following papers are all found in one volume of the Philosophical Transactions, London, printed for Lockyer Davis printer for the Royal Society. Printed in 1770, volume 63, viii, 507, (1) pp., with 20 folding plates. Bound in a sturdy cloth. Ex-library with the usual markings: paper spine label at spine bottom, rubber stamps on text block faces, bookplate. The text is very clean and fresh. (Several papers on early experimentation concerning electricity.) John Walsh, "Of the Electric Property of the Torpedo, in a letter from John Walsh, Esq., F.R.S. To Benjamin Franklin." pp 461-480. Followed by: John Hunter, "Anatomical Observations on the Torpedo" pp 481-489, illustrated with two large folding plates of the animal. The Walsh paper is an historic and important one in the history of electrophysiology, and establishes that the "torpedo" (known now as the electric eel) "sting" or "shock" was of an electrical origin—and this two decades before Galvani! "The first accurate study of the electrical organs of the torpedo fish were made by Walsh, who was given the Copley Medal of the Royal Society for his work on the subject. Walsh proved that the shock of the torpedo was electrical, and that the fish could only send the shock through a conductor (Garrison-Morton online, 589). John Nooth, "An Extract of a Letter from Dr. Nooth to Dr. Franklin . on Some Improvements in the Electrical Machine." pp 333-339, describing general improvements to electrical apparatus. Ebenezer Kinnersley, "Extract of a Letter . to Benjamin Franklin . on Some Electrical Experiments Made with Charcoal" pp38-39. ALSO, to continue, on LIGHTNING: Henry Cavendish, Benjamin Franklin, William Watson, John Robertson, and Benjamin Wilson , "A Report of the Committee Appointed by the Royal Society, to Consider of a Method for Securing the Powder Magazines at Purfleet" pp 42-48. Success in constructing lightning rods that protected the five powder magazines at Purfleet Garrison—which may otherwise have been a disaster when lightning struck the magazine a few years later. This was a considerable victory of applied experimental science. And another: a short note on these proceedings on page 66: "A Letter to Sir John Pringle . on Pointed Conductors," signed by Cavendish, Watson, Franklin, and Robertson. Benjamin Wilson, "Observations upon Lightning, and the Method of Securing Buildings from Its Effects" pp 49-65, where Wilson submits his work on cinductors and takes exception to the Franklin design. William Hamilton, "Account of the effects of a thunder-storm, on the 15th of March 1773, upon the house of Lord Tylney at Naples. In a letter from the Honourable Sir William Hamilton" pp 324-332 and a folding plate. Brydone, Ratrick, "Account of a fiery Meteor, seen on the 10th of Febbruary last; and also of some new electrical Experiments" pp 163-170. AND! Daines Barrington, "Experiments and Observations on the Singing of Birds" pp 249-291, being a long and substantial effort on the experimental study in birdsong and animal behavior. This has an accompanying folding plate with music that was composed to teach the Bullfinch a tune to sing! That is to say oit is not music inspired by the bird, but music that is meant for the bird to "learn" and to mimic. Offhand I'm not finding many cases of this sort of composition before this date, though the great Fr. Kircher published work including a transcribed song OF birds in Rome in his Musurgia Universalis in 1650. Barrington is engaged in trans-species education and obviously in trying to determine how birds think and learn. This seems extraordinary to me. …
