Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of ancient Rome through a collection of memorable stories and sayings. The author, a professor of rhetoric, compiled these anecdotes to illustrate various moral qualities, virtues, vices, merits, and demerits, using primarily Roman history, but also drawing on examples from other civilizations. These tales, which span a wide range of topics, reveal a deep interest in the role of fate, divine intervention, and the importance of respecting traditional customs. They explore the power of omens, dreams, and miracles in shaping individual and national destinies. The author delves into the significance of military discipline, the intricacies of Roman law, and the strict code of conduct expected of public figures. He sheds light on the beliefs and practices of ancient Roman society, from the importance of omens in guiding decisions to the rituals surrounding death and the role of the censor in maintaining public morals. Through this collection of intriguing anecdotes, the author provides an intimate portrait of ancient Roman culture, showcasing the beliefs, values, and anxieties that shaped the world of their time. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
