A fine first edition copy of the pastoral poem The Lamentations of Amyntas by Thomas Watson, translated by Abraham Fraunce. The first edition of this reprint of the original 1585 and 1587 works in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original glassine wrapper. The pastoral lament 'Amyntas' written in Latin by Thomas Watson, reprinted from the unique copy, dated 1585, held at the British Museum. Alongside is a reprint of the almost line-by-line translation by Abraham Fraunce, written in 1587. With facsimiles of the original title pages, an errata slip, and an introduction by Franklin M. Dickey. Thomas Watson is now chiefly remembered for his Hekatompathia or Passionate Century of Love (1582), but in the 1590s was highly regarded for his Latin poetry. In publisher's original cloth binding, with original glassine wrapper. Externally cloth is in excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Glassine wrapper is clean and smart except for minor chipping to the head and tail of the spine. Fine. book.
