Jackson, engraved by A.B. Walter from "A Photo From Life". Lee's portrait contains facsimile signatures of Lee and Pendleton. Jackson's portrait contain facsimile signatures of Jackson and Virginia Governor Letcher. Both works were commissioned to raise funds for monuments to these heroes of the Confederacy. The Lee Memorial Association was formed in 1870, and Jackson's Memorial Association was formed in 1871. Below each portrait is "Sold by authority of the Lee Memorial Association for the erection of a monument at the Tomb of Gen. Robt. E. Lee at Washington & Lee University Lexington Va." and "Sold by authority of the Jackson Monument Association for the purpose of erecting a Monument to the memory of Genl. Thomas J. The fund raising efforts eventually resulted in the recumbent statue of Lee by Edward Valentine in the expanded Lee Chapel at Washington and Lee in 1883 and the Jackson monument at VMI. ***.
