Original single issue of Richmond, Virginia newspaper and Confederate imprint. Large single printed broadsheet with numbered pages (uncut at top edges of pages 1/2 and 7/8 adjoining pages 3/4 and 5/6 respectively). Folded in fourths (at center vertical and horizontal) with strong crease lines; short tearing at and slight paper loss at folded corner which occurs approximately at center of publication. Full unfolded dimensions of 83.5cm x L 58.5cm but when folded to intended eight-sheet the top, bottom, and fore-edges are uneven so that its folded dimensions are H 42.75cm x L 30.5cm at highest and widest. Modest foxing and some slight soiling and toning; past owner's pencil signature at fore-edge margin of page 7. Front page features b/w top banner city-view as well as b/w portrait and accompanying biographical essay regarding Brigadier General Alfred Holt Colquitt. Literary essays and articles; several advertisements on page 8 along with political cartoon titled "Running the Blockade." Serial entry of Chapters XXIII-XXV of "Paddy McGann; or The Demon of the Stump" by W. Gilmore Simms. Masthead on page 2 provides date (presumably misprinted) as Saturday, May 2, 1863 whereas page 1 title specifies Saturday, May 9, 1863. A good+ copy of a scarce Confederate newspaper and wartime Richmond imprint which was intended as a Southern version of Harper's Weekly.
