Sir Lawrence James Wackett (1896-1982) was an Australian air force officer, aircraft designer, aeronautical engineer and aircraft-industry pioneer. He is widely regarded as "father of the Australian aircraft industry" and has been described as "one of the towering figures in the history of Australian aviation covering, as he did, virtually all aspects of activities: pilot, designer of airframes and engines, entrepreneur and manager". He was knighted for his services to aviation in 1954 and was a winner of the Oswald Watt Gold Medal. This autobiography includes a foreword by Sir Robert Menzies. The book is bound in the original blue boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping and a touch of fading to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with fading to the spine and about 1 3/4" of the spine edge of the back of the wrapper. The spine ends are bumped and chipped with some nicks at the top of the spine. A previous owner has reinforced the top of the spine with a strip of white paper on the reverse of the wrapper. …
