First Edition
John Piper and John Betjeman (illustrator). Faber & Faber, London, second edition 1976, first published 1963. Hardback. 189 pages plus 2 maps. Dust jacket. Since the first Shell Guide to South-West Wales was published in 1963, Carmarthensire and Pembrokeshire were merged into the new county of Dyfed. This guide sticks with the old two counties and leaves aside Cardiganshire - which was also merged into Dyfed. Carmarthenshire, a mixture of high barren moorland, rich valleys and heavy industry remained proudly Welsh in speech and way of life. Pembrokeshire is largely a plateau, mostly agricultural, bordered on three sides by magnificent cliffs and constituting one of the natural wonders of western Europe. The southern part has been more English in speech and tradition. The author describes over 200 parishes, noting the distinctive features of each, from simple eighteenth-century chapels in forgotten folds of the hills to the great castles of the Marcher lords. He also deals in greater detail than in the first edition, with the changing industrial pattern along the south-eastern coast of Carmarthenshire, with man's encroachment on the uplands, and with the growing significance of agriculture. Illustrated with many black & white photographs. Book in very good condition. Dust jacket very good and unclipped. Jacket generally very lightly soiled and spine slightly faded. Book.
