In the dust jacket, with periodic small and shallow closed and open tears to the edges. From the foreword- "Of the many established cultural institutions transferred to the western frontier none made a greater appeal to the frontiersman than the local newspaper. The frontier newspaper brought him news; it often confirmed his narrow political views or antagonized him by expressing opinions contrary to his beliefs; and it entertained him with a variety of printed matter. "Barbara Boyd Voltmer has traced the history of one of these frontier newspapers, Kern County's Courier, during the period of 1866-1876. Her story is well researched and interestingly written, and the Kern County Historical Society takes pleasure in presenting this work as its thirtieth annual publication." - Eugene Burmeister, President, Kern County Historical Society Signed by the author on the title page.
