From the publisher : De geschiedenis van Nederlands-Indië is vooral gedurende het koloniale tijdperk geschreven vanuit een Europese optiek. Men zag en beschreef voornamelijk het optreden van de Europese kolonisatoren. Een uitzondering op die regel vormde het werk van de historici J.C. van Leur en B.J.O. Schrieke. Zij legden het fundament voor wat na de dekolonisatie bekend werd als de Indocentrische geschiedopvatting. In dit boek wordt verslag gedaan van het onderzoek naar de redenen waarom deze Nederlandse historici, die bij leven ook deel uitmaakten van de bestuurshiërarchie in Nederlandsch-Indië, tot dat voor hun tijd opmerkelijke oeuvre kwamen. De totstandkoming van hun visie wordt beschreven als het resultaat van hun reactie op de politeke, culturele en wetenschappelijke ontwikkelingen in hun tijd. Aan de basis van het onderzoek van de auteur ligt een biografische studie. Hij concludeert dat het groeiende verzet van de Indonesische bevolking tegen de Nederlandse overheersing een veel geringere rol heeft gespeeld in de standpuntbepaling van Schrieke en Van Leur dan men zou verwachten. Vooral het Indocentrisme van Van Leur blijkt het resultaat te zijn van een reactie op puur Europese ontwikkelingen. Dit geldt in mindere mate voor Schrieke, wiens werk ontstond vanuit de behoefte het koloniale beleid van een wetenschappelijk fundament te voorzien. Condition : very good copy. ISBN 9789065504067.
