Το βιβλίο παρουσιάζει το οδοιπορικό του Γάλλου περιηγητή, επιστήμονα και καλλιτέχνη Théodore du Moncel στην Ελλάδα κατά τα έτη 1843-1844, με κύριο άξονα τη διαδρομή από την Αθήνα προς το Ναύπλιο. Τα κείμενα συνδυάζουν ταξιδιωτικές εντυπώσεις, παρατηρήσεις για τη σύγχρονη ελληνική κοινωνία και εκτενείς αναφορές στα αρχαιολογικά κατάλοιπα και τα μνημεία που συναντά ο συγγραφέας. Η πορεία περνά από την Αθήνα και τα βυζαντινά μνημεία της, τη Μονή Δαφνίου, την Ελευσίνα, τα Μέγαρα, την Κόρινθο, τη Νεμέα, τις Μυκήνες, το Άργος και το Ναύπλιο, ενώ περιλαμβάνονται επίσης αναφορές στην Τίρυνθα, την Επίδαυρο και την Αίγινα. Ιδιαίτερη αξία έχει η πλούσια εικονογράφηση με αναπαραγωγές των λιθογραφιών του Du Moncel, οι οποίες αποτυπώνουν αρχαιότητες, τοπία, αρχιτεκτονικά μνημεία και σκηνές καθημερινής ζωής στην Ελλάδα του πρώτου μισού του 19ου αιώνα. Πρόκειται ταυτόχρονα για ταξιδιωτικό χρονικό, ιστορική μαρτυρία και σημαντικό εικονογραφικό τεκμήριο για την εικόνα της Ελλάδας στα μάτια ενός Ευρωπαίου περιηγητή της εποχής.
