WARNING : Probably bound out of order - paginated & bound in sections throughout, large portions of which are of biblical literature & stories headed 'Short Sermons'. These seem to be referred to under 'General' on contents pages. It would appear that… the separate parish sections for 1879 are bound within 1880 to the rear of the volume along near those of 1880. Approx 300 pages. Red binding, light wear with creases to spine-ends, small frays to corners, light surface wear to spine, slight darkening to boards. Some browning to end-papers. Page long ink inscription to flyleaf dated 1900. Inner front hinge cracked through to upper half causing a wobble, slight creacked 1mm showing cloth to inner rear hinge. Text is very clean with attractive b/w illustrations.

This volume features the very scarce title, The Ellesmere Ruridecanal Magazine, with only 2 records on Jisc. This magazine ran from 1879 to 1897. The Ellesmere was issued with The Parish Magazine as an insert, as seen in this copy. The… magazines feature a wide variety of articles, short stories, and local news. Part two of this work features frequent monochrome vignette and full-page illustrations throughout. The Parish Magazine, which at the time was the first commercial parish magazine inset, was issued and edited by British clergyman John Erskine Clarke. Bound in brown cloth. Externally, a little worn. Joints broken. Reinforced front hinge has resulted in stiffness when opening the work. Rear hinge starting. Mild rubbing to extremities. Moderate loss to head and tail. Moderate age toning to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, with occasional spotting. Moderate age toning to text block edges. Mild cockling throughout. Good.
