A novel appearing in installments by the Ukrainian author Maik Iohansen (1895-1937) writing under the pseudonym of Villi Vetselius. Iohansen was an extraordinary figure, a poet, linguist, literary theorist, polyglot translator and prosaist. His contribution is vast and variegated and beyond a very succinct summation. In brief, he participated in avant-garde Ukrainian writers' groups in Kharkiv, founded writers' group VAPLITE (Free Academy of Proletarian literature), and lectured widely; after the Ukrainian suppression in 1930 he focused on translations and wrote children's books, humorous sketches and travel books. In 1937 he was arrested for subversion and executed together with other members of the Ukrainian Renaissance. Photomontage cover and title page design by Meller are highly inventive. Vadym Meller (1884-1962) was one of the most important Ukrainian avant-garde painters and graphic artists. His theater designs for the 1925 Paris Exposition brought him the Gold Medal.
