Cream Wraps over Boards. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Second Edition (500 cc). 261 pages; "Here ends the poems of Master Francois Villon of Paris now first done into English verse in the original forms with a biographical and critical introduction by John Payne. Done into type for Thomas B. Mosher and publi…shed by him at Portland Maine in the month of November Anno Domini MDCCCV." Cover is a cream paper wrapper that can be taken off the boards, book edges are decaled and darkened to a tan color, as are the outside of the boards covered by the paper covers; contents are nearly foxing-free, page color is as white as published, despite edge darkening; a vertical hinge-bound strip of paper between xiv xv darkens the hinge 0.5 inch either side; owner's pencil message is written on the front flyleaf; frontispiece is lightly darkened and is the title page opposite; there is also some pencil marks in the text, mainly on page 157-158 and 184, a few words underlined, and some marks in the margin--otherwise, book is in nice condition. Dj is made of thinner paper that has darkened to a tan color and has lost area at the two upper fold corners and at the dj spine ends (about 2 sq. in. total); title print on spine is plain; paper is a bit fragile on mid spine where thumbed, but otherwise is doing its job. A probably unwelcome addition is two clips of John Barrymore (in profile) as Villon in costume that looks more like Robin Hood. Clips are mounted in blank areas, not tipped in, and could be difficult to remove cleanly. They are circa half securely mounted, edges are free.
