Sebastien le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), engineer and military architect, member of the French academy of sciences and Marshal of France, was Commissioner General of fortifications from 1678 to 1703. He is known as one of the greatest military engineers of all times and one of the greatest figures of France during the reign of the Sun King.
