Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. Julius Caesar was, as this book maintains, quite simply the most famous Roman who ever lived. His influence endures to the present day: in our 'Julian' calendar of 365.25 days, which he introduced; in the geographical entity we call France, whose boundaries he established; and, thanks to his 'invasion' of 55 BCE, his is virtually the earliest familiar name in the history of Britain. This introductory book seeks to explore the many facets of his complex character - his vanity and his vitality, his charisma and his cruelty. It seeks to set his astounding career and accomplishments against the background of late republican Rome, so enabling the reader to understand not only Caesar himself but also the violent and destructive world in which he grew up. It traces in detail the sources of his phenomenal rise to power and the deep unpopularity which ultimately made him 'one of the loneliest men alive'. Garland pays particular attention to the day of Caesar's death, which can, like no other day of the ancient world, be re-constructed on an almost hour-by-hour basis. Caesar's powerful legacy is also examined, as is his 'reception' in European thought and culture from antiquity to the present day in a variety of media, including epic poetry, drama, fiction and film. The book includes a guide to further reading. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Audio Book (DVD). Condition: New. NEVER USED - STILL IN ORIGINAL SHRINK WRAP. =================================== Living History: Great Events of the Ancient and Medieval Worlds takes you back in time and throws a spotlight on two dozen turning points where the tide of history changes irrevocably. Taught by acclaimed Professor Robert Garland of Colgate University, these 24 dramatic lectures examine key events from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome to medieval Europe and Asia. Spanning thousands of years and three continents, this course illuminates fascinating historical dramas on the individual scale. More than covering great events that change the contours of history, Professor Garland takes you into the scene and allows you to hear what he terms the "heartbeat of history." Rather than merely reviewing the facts of events such as the Battle of Marathon, the arrest and trial of Jesus, and the coronation of Charlemagne, youll engage with a variety of first-hand accounts and authentic primary and secondary sources to experience what it was like to live these events as they occurred. From reports by historians such as Herodotus and Livy to official scrolls and administrative records, these eyewitness sources and ancient documents take you back in time through the eyes of people who were there. Through a blend of historical facts and imaginative reasoning, Living History: Great Events of the Ancient and Medieval Worlds offers you the chance to meet the actors and witness the great events as they occur. Professor Garland breaks down these turning points to days and even hours so you will truly feel like a participant in stories hundreds or thousands of years oldbut still in a vibrant and fascinating world.

Octavo, paperbound (stiff brown textured stapled wrappers), 23 pp. Fine. From Preface: This story of The Petrified Creatures that lived 285 million years ago at "The Wilds," was written by the late Dr. Harold O. Whitnall, professor of geology, Colgate University, and added to by William P. Anderson and the owner in answer to the many requests for an outline in booklet form of the natural find here. The owner wishes to express his deep appreciation and thanks to the many paleontologists and geologists from various parts of the United Sates and other countries who have been so helpful in identifying the many specimens recorded here and for their cooperation as a whole. Deep-sea fishing in central New York, within a stone's toss of U. S. Route 20, may seem to be the extravagantly fanciful dream of an overwrought fisherman. Yet this very sport is being carried on daily at "The Wilds" near Warren, New York. Here the visitor may witness the trawling operation and see displayed the "catches" of marine animals which once swam or floated in the waters or crawled or burrowed in the muddy bottoms of a very ancient sea. The Wilds are located on the uplifted bed of a sea which spread over central and southern New York some 285,000,000 years ago. Known to geologists as the Devonian, this sea of the long ago extended within the borders of the North American continent as a broad V from Nova Scotia, south westerly, to the Gulf of Mexico and hence northwesterly to Alaska. Had the Queen Mary plowed that almost forgotten sea she would have passed, had she steered a central course, nearly over the sea-bottom of The Wilds. New York, Warren, Devonian, Paleontology yslic.
