I would venture to say this is the best illustrated version of this book I have ever seen, full of animated, brilliant paintings. A must for your illustrated books collection!

Dated 1889 on the copyright page, but no date on the title page. Prize inscription on first blank, dated 1892. A fair copy in cream boards, titled and illustrated in red and black. Both inner hinges broken, but holding; considerable wear to extremities and along outer hinges; about 3/4 inch missing from both spine ends; smudge to front endpaper; toning to boards. The book is complete, however, and internally fine.

Joel Chandler Harris created the fictional narrator Uncle Remus, whose stories were intended to depict the struggles of plantation life in the American South, so that makes a certain amount of sense, but does not make them any less problematic. The book is in fair condition, shelf rubbing has caused some minor wear on the edges of the book, and over time the aging process his caused a few areas of minor discoloration on the front, spine, and back portions of the book cover, some of the stitching of the binding is loose in areas, with minor cracking on the front interior cover, a few pages have come free of the principle but are still present, the text however appears clean and clear.
