"For one hundred and fifty years the Gurkhas have been coming down from their mountain homes of Nepal to join the British Army. In that time they have carved a reputation as the toughest, bravest and most lovable fighting troops in the world. Certainly they are the best known. (This book) tellls their exciting, humorous and moving story. The vast canvas ranges from the formation of the first Gurkha Regiments on April 24, 1815, to their steadfastness during the Indian Mutiny, through the fierce nineteenth century wars on India's turbulent frontiers, into World War I in France, Mesopotamia, and Gallipoli. We join them as they add further glory to their reputation during World War II in North Africa, Italy and the jungles of Burma. The post-war period tells of their activities in Malaya and Borneo, and of their last-ditch actions against the Chinese on the cold, bare mountains of India's disputed northern frontier. It is a story of great endurance, courage far beyond the call of duty, and of staunch loyalty to the British Crown. The Gurkhas suffered 45,000 casualties in the two World Wars. They have won twelve VCs and countless other decorations for gallantry." Cigarette odour, book lightly cracked at page 113, light browning to edges of text block, very light edgewear, slight wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light waviness to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has several edge tears with creases and chips, browning on spine and flap-folds, general light edge wrinkling, light rubbing and soiling.
