À leur arrivée à Paris en 1943, la mère d'Antoine Tudal, Jeannine Guillou, et son compagnon depuis 1937, Nicolas de Staël, s'installent dans l'hôtel particulier de Pierre Chéreau, rue Nollet, dans le quartier des Batignolles. Pierre Chéreau est alors en exil en Amérique, son bien confisqué par les autorités allemandes ; c'est la galeriste Jeanne Bucher qui le leur fait ouvrir, avec son parc en friche où les gamins des rues avoisinantes viennent s'encanailler auprès du jeune Antoine. Ce petit franco-polonais qui se fait aussi appeler Antek est, d'après sa mère, « inattrapable en corps et en esprit ». Antoine Tudal a concentré sur quelques pages le regard aigu qu'il porte sur le monde adulte, et toute sa rage de la solitude, son angoisse devant un univers menacé par le silence. Pierre Reverdy, à qui l'on rapporte l'histoire, est tout de suite ému par cet enfant dans une mansarde qui, comme lui, aurait su reconnaître en la poésie « le seul moyen de combler l'abîme qui baille entre les choses ». Il alerte le peintre Georges Braque, qui décide de faire imprimer un choix de poèmes chez Robert-J. Godet.
