Nach dem Umzug nach Stuttgart 1867, wo er im Kreis um Mörike verkehrte, folgten seine wichtigsten Arbeiten: Illustrationen zu Shakespeares Sommernachtstraum (Heidelberg 1868) und zum Falstaff (Lahr 1870). Sein letztes Werk war das Kinderbuch: "Der schwarze Peter". Die Verse stammten von seinem Schwager Johannes Trojan, der aus dem Nachlass eine große Zahl von einzelnen Blättern in illustrierten Zeitungen sowie Volks-, Kinder- und Jugendbüchern veröffentlichte und so zu Konewkas Bekanntheit weiter betrug. Konewkas Werke wurden geschätzt, weil sie sich "durch reiche Phantasie, glänzenden Humor und feines Formgefühl auszeichneten". Small folio (11.5 by 9 inches); twenty eight heavy paper leaves, printed on rectos, each with neat linen hinges as issued by the publisher, comprising an elaborate colored frontispiece page, a printed title page in red & black, and an introductory poem with its hand-washed 'messy monkey' artist v…ignette, followed by 25 leaves printed on rectos, of the letters of the alphabet except 'i' (which was, as often, left out.) Meyerheim (1842-1915) was a master artist, considered the finest artist of his time in rendering animals. He drew each letter, and surrounded it with all kinds of things and especially animals whose names (in German) started with the letter. And each drawing has been watercolor washed. Each letter has a sympathetic poem by J. Trojan. This text block is in near fine condition. The binding not so nice. Boards and cloth spine worn, lacking brown coated free endpapers. Neat name, "Edward L. Friess / Dec. 25th, 1886" on front free endpaper. An opportunity to buy (cheaply) one of the most attractive and inventive alphabet books. Scarce.

Facing pages feature verse about each of the professions. This is a rare book, and especially so in this condition. Some soilage on the boards, which are nonetheless attractive and the illustration of artisans dancing is bright. Endpapers decorated with gnome figures carrying props of various trades. Book is tight, and pages are generally clean, with the slightest of toing. A small or discreet inscription on title page, and a few inconsequential chips do not mar the superior quality of this copy, which is in very good or better condition. Hey, Paul (illustrator).

Library markings and stamp on title pages.…Paper brittle and well browned. Kladderadatsch was a Berlin newspaper founded in the aftermath of the 1848 revolution. Kladderadatsch offered political caricature, was irreverant, dry, and laconic. With the resignation of Rudolf Lowenstein in 1886, Editors in Chief during this period wer Johannes Trojan; Paul Warnke. The magazine gradually protrayed a pro-government stance during the Bismarck period. This is an oversized or heavy book, that requires additional postage for international delivery outside the US.
