Era una operazione che aspirava a restituire spessore storico e ricchezza problematica a un piccolo pamphlet, cui si riconosceva al più un certo interesse per la storia delle questioni linguistiche nell'area napoletana, e l'attenzione che ad essa da più parti fu prestata dimostrò che quell'aspirazione non era del tutto infondata: Ğil libro, scrisse Michele Prisco in un'acuta recensione, travalica l'apparente contingenza della "curiosità" e va a collocarsi nella nostra biblioteca fra i contributi più notevoli e seri della e sulla cultura di quegli anniğ (II Mattino, 7/9/1982). Reazioni di segno opposto e fraintendimenti ci furono (si veda, ad esempio, il lungo saggio-recensione di Anna Santoro su Esperienze letterarie, n. 2 del 1993), ma i dissensi furono inferiori ai consensi; e, tra questi ultimi, mi ha onorato quello di Raffaele La Capria in particolare, che dalla mia rivisitazione critica della polemica Serio/Galiani trasse stimoli per la sua affascinante lettura della cultura napoletana degli ultimi secoli, che ispira l'Armonia perduta (Milano, Mondadori, 1986). Sono stati anche questi riconoscimenti a convincermi dell'utilità di questa nuova edizione, che ha peraltro il vantaggio di una traduzione integrale del testo del Vernacchio e di un corredo di note storico-linguistiche, l'una e l'altro opera di Rosa Troiano.
