"Sales/posting to the USA suspended". Folio hard cover dust wrapper, 377pp some b&w photos. Light wear to dw/board edges, top corners scrunched, bottom corners lightly bumped, gift inscription (non-authorial); a very good copy. John Treloar kept a diary from the day he sailed from Melbourne in a ship of the First Convoy until March 1917, with the only interruption being for four months from September 1915 when he was evacuated from Gallipoli. His diary provides an intimate record of the events in the Middle East and France from the point of view of a staff officer who enjoyed the confidence of the great commanders of the AIF. He had a varied career: he was with the 1st Australian Division's General Staff, embarking on 21 October 1914, he served on Gallipoli as a Warrant Officer, was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1 Squadron Australian Flying Corps, was ordered to report to 1 Anzac Corps Headquarters in France in July 1916 where he served until appointed to raise and command the War Records Section.

Large oblong folio, comprising 52 tipped colour plates, with facing letterpress descriptions. A most attractive copy. A beautifully presented album of works by Australian artists of the First World War. It includes all theatres of the conflict, including the Light Horse in Palestine and Damascus, through to the European battlefields of Fromelles, Bullecourt, Messines, Ypres, and so forth. Naval scenes of interest include a depiction of the Australian submarine AE2 crossing the Dardanelles into the Sea of Marmora; and another presents the surrender of the High German Fleet. Of special aviation importance is plate number nineteen by Harold Power, depicting the spectacular rescue Captain D.W. Rutherford in the days before the Battle for Gaza (March 1917). He crashed into the desert, and faced a dire fate at the hands of advancing Turkish cavalry, before a sudden and daring rescue by Lieutenant F.H. McNamara. Both officers were members of First Squadron, Australian Flying Corps, and Lieutenant McNamara was later awarded the Victoria Cross for his efforts. Artists represented in the album include Arthur Streeton, George Lambert, Charles Wheeler, Louis McCubbin, and Fred Leist (amongst several others).
