Spine a touch toned, rubbing near spine crown, near imperceptible slip along one spine compartment. Foxing to prelims, else internally clean. A very nice copy of this beautiful volume. Original full vellum. Stamped in gold with double fillets, a fox in the center of the upper cover and grapes and vine-leaves in the angles of both covers. Cambridge University Press for George G. Harrap. With engraved title, 11 original full page copper engravings on plates, and many decorative woodcut initials by Stephen Gooden. Gilt-lettered spine and ornate covers with double gilt fillets, grapes on corners and jumping fox in the center of front cover. The slipcase is not the original one from 1936 but was created by a later master bookbinder. Re-impression of the seventh corrected 1724 edition of L'Estrange's (1617-1705) translation. Stephen Gooden's (1892-1955) masterpiece. The animals are rendered with such plasticity in every detail that they seem to jump out of the leaf. - Bodemann 434.1.
