The first volume discusses Plato's life and milieu; the second two his Dialogues. Friedländer was a German-born philologist who had a distinguished career in Germany before being imprisoned and exiled in 1939, after which he had a distinguished career in the United States, teaching at Johns Hopkins and UCLA. These translations, done under the author's supervision, are based on the second German editions of 1954-1960, with some revisions to the text and extensive revisions and additions to the notes.
