Hardback. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition in English. First edition in English. Crown 8vo. 98pp. Red cloth, lettered in silver to spine. Jacket design by Harry More-Gordon. Faint foxing to top edge, a hint of soiling to rear dustwrapper panel, with a shallow chip to crown of lightly sunned spine, else Fine. Translated from the French by Edward Owen Marsh. Premiered on 10th December 1957 at the New Theatre, St. Martin's Lane, London, after an Oxford Playhouse try-out. It was directed by Frank Hauser, and starred John Justin, Jill Bennett, Alan MacNaughtan, Lally Bowers, and Ian Hendry. Originally staged under the title Le Rendez-vous de Senlis, at the Théâtre de l'Atelier on 30 January 1941, in a production directed by André Barsacq. That starred Michel Vitold, Denise Bosc, Jean Dasté, Madeleine Geoffroy, Georges Rollin, and Monelle Valentin. A man's ultimately fruitless attempt to impress the girl he loves by hiring actors to portray his imaginary wealthy parents. Forming part of Anouilh's pièces roses or "pink plays", and additionally comprising Le Bal des voleurs [Carnival of Thieves] (1938), and Léocadia [Time Remembered] (1940), the focus of these urbane comedies is on fantasy substituting reality. A prolific French dramatist whose career spanned five decades, Anouilh is best remembered today for his 1944 adaptation of Sophocles' classical drama Antigone, viewed as an attack on Marshal Pétain's Vichy government.

The boards are bordered with an elegant gilt fillet, the spine richly gilt-decorated in compartments with gilt rules and floral devices, and with a contrasting red morocco spine label lettered in gilt. A handsome, noble presentation binding in excellent condition. Content: Near fine content (bright, tight and clean - as shown). Tight, square, and beautifully preserved throughout. Illustrations: Complete, with twelve full-page reproductions from engravings by Stephen Gooden, each printed on special paper and facing its referenced text page (including "Death and the Woodman," "Juno and the Peacock," "The Old Man and the Three Youths," etc.). The plates are sharply printed and retain excellent tonal depth.  ****  The book: A refined 1933 English edition of La Fontaine's celebrated Fables, here translated into verse by Edward Marsh and presented in an elegant private-press style printing. The collaboration between Marsh's dignified poetic rendering and Stephen Gooden's exquisitely engraved illustrations produces a volume of exceptional literary and artistic harmony. Gooden's plates evoke both classical restraint and imaginative precision, underscoring the fables' timeless moral wit, irony, and human insight. This copy is elevated further by its luxury Bayntun binding, representing the finest traditions of English hand-binding: restrained design, precise tooling, and impeccable craftsmanship. As both a literary classic and an object of art, the volume stands as a distinguished collector's example of early 20th-century fine book production.
