"Hofmann was born and grew up in Limbach, Saxony (Germany) which, after World War II, became part of East Germany. In 1948, he moved with his family to Leipzig. There, he attended a school for translators and interpreters, studying English and Russian. In 1950, he enrolled to Leipzig University, where he studied Romance languages and Slavic languages. In 1951, he fled from the German Democratic Republic and settled in Freiburg im Breisgau, where he continued his studies. In 1957, he graduated with a thesis on Henry James. Hofmann began his writing career as a writer of radio plays. After one year as a research assistant at the University of Freiburg, he left Germany in 1961 for Bristol to teach German literature. Over the next ten years he taught at universities in Europe in Toulouse, Paris, Edinburgh, and in the United States at New Haven, Berkeley, California and Austin. " (from Wikipedia).

Hard cover. 327 p. Audience: College/higher education; Professional and scholarly. This new series brings into modern English a reliable translation of a representative portion of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's vast body of work. This edition, selected from over 140 volumes in German, is the new standard in English, and contains poetry, drama, fiction, memoir, criticism, and scientific writing by the man who is probably the most influential writer in the German language. The executive editors of this collection are Victor Lange of Princeton University, Eric Blackall of Cornell University, and Cyrus Hamlin of Yale University. Princeton University Press is proud to be the distributor of the twelve volumes in hardcover of the originating publisher, Suhrkamp Verlag. In addition, Princeton will issue paperback reprints of these volumes over the next two years, beginning with volumes one through three. Goethe, the founder of the poetry of experience, created a body of poetry that is unsurpassed in lucidity of speech and imagery and in instinct for melody and rhythm. Nonetheless, many of his poems are relatively unknown to English-speaking audiences, partly because of the difficulties they have posed to translators. This volume contains translations, side by side with the German originals, of Goethe's major poems--all prepared by eminent American and English writers, and all attesting to his poetic genius. Goethe's most complex and profound work, Faust was the effort of the great poet's entire lifetime. Written over 60 years, it can be read as a document of Goethe's moral and artistic development. Faust is made available to the English reader in a completely new translation that communicates both its poetic variety and its many levels of tone. The language is present-day English, and Goethe's formal and rhythmic variety is reproduced in all its richness. The reflections on art and literature that Goethe produced throughout his life are the premise and corollary of his work as poet, novelist, and man of science. This volume contains such important essays as "On Gothic Architecture, " "On the Laocoon Group, " and "Shakespeare: A Tribute." Several works in this collection appear for the first time unabridged and in fresh translations. Very good in fine dust jacket. only flaw is previous owner blind stamp on first page.

"This collection of more than two hundred of Nietzsche's letters offers a representative body of correspondence on subjects of main concern to him--philosophy, history, morals, music and literature. Also included are letters of biographical interest which, in Middleton's words, mark the stresses and turnings of his life. Among the addressees are Richard Wagner, Erwin Rohde, Jacob Burkhardt, Lou Salome, his mother, and his sister Elisabeth. The annihilating split in Nietzsche's personality that has been associated with his collapse on a street in Turin in 1889 is described in a moving letter from Franz Overbeck which forms the Epilogue.".

First edition SIGNED. Cid Corman, editor of Origin roughly 1950-2003, almost always read a book with pen in hand. Cid also almost always signed all of his personal books from his library and dated when receiving or purchasing the book. Cid also often would note, if a gift, and who had sent the gift -- many times another poet. His personal books range from heavy annotation from Cid where he often in unique marginalia would correct the author, agree with the author, argue with the author and leave it to Cid the often ultimate proofreader to correct the publisher. Close to fine and bright glossy wraps with strong spine and with crisp bright text throughout. In this case, annotated here and there by Cid Corman.

Penguin Modern European Poets series - Penguin Catalogue No. D106. First printing of the true first edition, published as a paperback original (PBO) in 1969. Cover photograph of Günter Grass by Hans Rama. ***Very good in colour illustrated thin card covers, with the publisher's dual price of 20p / 4/- on the back cover. The covers have some light edge wear and rubbing commensurate with age and handling, but no significant creases or tears - just slightly marked at the top of the fore-edge of the page block. Spine slightly faded with a light vertical reading crease. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions or other annotations. Inside of covers slightly browned, and paper stock lightly tanned, but pages clean. No creases or tears. Spine tight. Covers bright. ***88 pages. 180mm x 110mm. ***'Günter Grass, famous as a novelist, is here presented as a poet in a selection from his three published volumes. Grass's belief that an artist, however committed he may be in life, should be only a jester in art, is admirably practised in these poems in which fantasy, ingenuity and humour are substitutes for didacticism, and no word, thing or idea is too sacrosanct to be played with. Even in the recent controversial political poems, which come close to blurring his division between life and art, Grass's tremendous zest and sensuous response are felt.' ***'Penguin Modern European Poets is designed to present, in verse translations, the work of significant poets of this century for readers unfamiliar with the original languages. The series already includes Yevtushenko, Rilke, Apollinaire, Prévert, Quasimodo, a volume of Greek poets, Holub, Herbert and Enzensberger.' (Quotes taken from the back cover) ***First printing of the true first edition, in the original card covers, in very good condition.
