Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. A Rare title in Contemporary red cloth boards with gilt pictorial inlay of a fort to the front cover contained within border. The book has bevelled edges, gilt title to spin and lettered in black to the upper cover.Slight scuff and rubbing to head of spine and to a couple of corners of the book. There is one former owner's bookplate to the front pastedown and one small previous bookseller's catalogue entry tipped onto the front endpaper (easily removed) The binding remains firm with NO hinge weakness. There is a coloured map of Ohet as frontispiece and there are a further 84 drawings and sketches. The wonderfully atmospheric life story of a fortress charts brilliantly the development of fortification and the art of the siege This evocative work is one of the greatest and most unusual books ever written on siege warfare and fortifications. The author recreates the life of a French castle from its obscure origins to its fate in the Franco-Prussian War.As an architect and experienced military engineer Viollet-le-Duc was uniquely placed to write on the history of fortifications. In Annals of a Fortress he examines the life of the imaginery Castle of La Roche-Pont as it endures numerous protracted and bitter sieges. Viollet-le-Duc was a noted military engineer serving admirably in the Franco-Prussian War, and also an architectural historian.Great copy for the collector,if not in the original binding then certainly contemporary to the time,8vo (xv) 390pp Plus 40pp of Publisher's list at rear of the book.First Edition 1875.…

Hardcover. Condition: Good+. No Dust Jacket. First British Edition. This ex-library cpy has a special pedigree. It was withdrawn in 1923 from the Carnegie Free Library of Allegheny PA, which is now the North Side of Pittsburgh. This was one of the first two Carnegie Libraries in the United States (the first was in Scotland and the other original American one was in Braddock PA, followed later by many others). The library markings have a certain charm. The book is bound in plain brown library buckram, stained with age, but it has an elegant new gold-tooled label, and a sweet little paper call number on the base of the spine. The colorful front plate is present, and the book is replete with black and white illustrations. The pages are toned to a creamy beige, The bottom corner of the first three pages has been snipped, with no loss to the text. A nice copy for the historian of library science. Fast shipping, with tracking number provided. ; Ex-Library; 6"x9"x1"; 394 pages.…

"For us, today, Viollet-le-Duc is a figure of considerable importance because he is the last great theorist in the world of architecture, and the modern architect still leans heavily on verities which he expounded . his principal legacy to architectural thought is contained in the two dictionaries and the lectures - most clearly of all in the first volume of the latter." - Heavenly mansions, p. 135.
