The manuscript likely remained unpublished due to fears of political persecution for its anti-monarchical views. With an introduction, notes & glossary by Richard G. Barnes. Illustrated throughout with black & white reproductions of sixteenth-century etchings by Marcus Gheeraerts, from Mythologia ethica of Arnold Freitag (1579). Full Nigerian goatskin leather with gilt lettering to the spine, gilt decoration to the front, top edge gilt, silk ribbon page marker, decorative lettered endpapers, xxxviii + 378 pages, 16 tipped in colour plates, two being foldouts, housed in a buckram solander box. Box measures approximately 36x28x7.5cm. Fantastic, near fine condition. Often considered to be the definitive encyclopaedia of classical mythology, and an influential bridge between the ancient world and western art and literature. It was a primary source for Dante, Chaucer, and Milton. Shakespeare also drew inspiration from the work - most notably in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Romeo and Juliet.

This is the third Arion Press title. Printed on T.H. Saunders mould made paper at the printing office of Andrew Hoyem. Printed in black with mauve (purple) initials and decorations. Measures 9.25 x 12 inches. Very good condition. Clear mylar cover protects the binding. The book is in the original silver slipcase, but the slipcase is cracked at the bottom. This title originally sold for $87.50. There are no longer any copies available from the Arion Press archives. The prospectus is 8 pages, folded but not stapled, with a small insert showing the kind of paper to be used.
