A substantial and influential 17th-century trilingual lexicon based on the Syriac-Arabic lexical work of Elias bar Shinaja (Elijah of Nisibis), here presented in a Latin scholarly edition compiled and translated by the Franciscan orientalist Tommaso Obicini. Printed in Rome by the press of the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide, the Thesaurus Arabico-Syro-Latinus was intended for use by theologians, missionaries, linguists, and scholars working with Eastern Christian and Islamic texts. The work reflects the early modern Catholic engagement with Semitic languages and Eastern Christian scholarship, combining medieval Near Eastern sources with 17th-century European philological methods. It was widely consulted in academic and ecclesiastical contexts throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Printed throughout in Arabic, Syriac, and Latin types. The title page bears the imprint of the Propaganda Fide press and includes institutional library seals, indicating historical scholarly ownership and use. A serious reference work rather than a decorative volume, and increasingly scarce on the market in complete, sound condition. Condition (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY) Antiquarian condition. Bound in contemporary stiff vellum boards with manuscript-style spine titling. The vellum is intact and firm, showing age-related discoloration, light staining, surface wear, and handling marks. Small holes, abrasions, and wear are present at the spine, with rubbing and wear to edges and corners. The binding remains solid and functional but is stiff, as expected for vellum of this period. The text block is complete and secure. Pages exhibit uniform age-related toning and some stiffness consistent with 17th-century paper. Deckled edges are uneven and show wear, softening, and occasional minor chipping. Light surface soiling, spotting, and typical age-related imperfections are present throughout. No major tears, losses, or damage affecting the text have been observed. The text remains clear and legible throughout in Arabic, Syriac, and Latin. Institutional library provenance: The title page bears circular library ownership seals and minor ink markings from a former institutional or monastic library, as visible in the photographs. No attempts have been made to remove or obscure these marks, which are typical for scholarly books of this nature and period. This volume shows clear evidence of historical scholarly use but remains a sound, complete, and usable example. All condition statements are made conservatively. Buyers should expect wear, aging, stiffness, and institutional markings consistent with a nearly 400-year-old academic book.

8vo (112 x 164 mm). (14) ff., (2 blank ff.), 286 pp., final blank leaf. With woodcut vignette to title-page. Contemporary limp vellum with ms. spine title. Extremely rare: the fourth edition altogether of this early native grammar by the Moroccan scholar Sanhagius (Abu 'Abdallah Muhammad Ibn Daud as-Sanhadji Ibn Adjurrum, 1273-1323), following those by the Medicean Press (1592, only 24 pages), of Kirsten (1610), and Erpenius (1617). "This [publication is] still in the handy small octavo size similar to [.] that of the 'Alphabeta'. The [editor] warns the reader against irregularities in the text, owing to the difficulties of printing Arabic texts, and the new type [.] The attrative 24pt types are identical with Granjon's 'arabe du Kitab al-Bustan', first used by Basa in 1585, and afterwards rarely used. On the second leaf, a rather unusual 'approbatio' is printed, by Pietro della Valle, dated 'ex Musaeo', April 1630. In 18 lines a very laudatory account of the work is given, preceded and followed by the official imprimatur of the Church authorities" (Smitskamp). It is edited by Tommaso Obicini da Novara (1585-1632), "one of the figures at the background of the Propaganda Press, abbot of the Franciscan convent at Aleppo from 1613-16 and 1619-20, and in 1620 elected Custode di Terra Santa e Commissario Apostolico per tutto l'Oriente. In 1621 he returned to Rome, and became the first lector of Arabic in the St. Peter Convent at Rome" (ibid.). - Some worming to hinges; paper a little browned throughout. Early underlinings in green ink to Pietro della Valle's Approbatio. - Autograph ownership of the Protestant theologian Johann Wülfer (1651-1724) of Nuremberg, dated 1675, to front flyleaf: "Comparavit Romae Anno Jubilae MDCLXXV pro 4 Pauli / Joh. Wülfer". - Schnurrer no. 63. Smitskamp 222 (with fig. on p. 184). Graf IV, 175. Lambrecht 601. Fück 77.

8vo. (8), 447, (1) pp. (48, last 4 blank), 66 pp. (last p. misnumbered 70, lacks last blank). Title with woodcut device. Contemporary reversed sheep, blank spine in five compartments. An Arabic-Syriac-Latin glossary arranged by subject, originally compiled in the 11th century by the Nestorian Elias bar Shinaja of Syria (known as Barsinaeus in the Latin tradition) as "Kitab at-targuman fi ta'lim lugat as-suryan". The present text and translation, prepared by the Franciscan Obicini, was posthumously published by the monk's student and successor Dominicus Germanus de Silesia, "himself also the author of an Arabic grammar, and an Italian-Arabic dictionary" (Smitskamp). "Not actually a thesaurus, but rather a nomenclator, arranged not by alphabet, but by subject" (cf. Schnurrer). The French punchcutter Robert Granjon cut the Arabic type used for the glossary. - Binding somewhat worn; minor foxing. Ownership stamp (Germain: Jacobins P.B.S.) and signature of De la Roche (marquis) on title, last page with another owner's inscription. From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013). - Schnurrer p. 38 f. Smitskamp 223. Fück 77. NUC 425, p. 564. ICCU VEAE\003127.
