Add to basketCondition: Fine. The Battle of Vigo Bay was an engagement that saw a combined Dutch/English naval force successfully capture one of Spain's famous treasure fleets, protected by an allied escort of French ships. The battle took place off the northwestern coast of Spain in 1702 as part of the larger War of Spanish Succession. Though much of the treasure had been unloaded by the time the victory was assured, the success would ultimately lead Portugal to abandon Spain and join Britain and the Dutch Republic in the Grand Alliance. The famous battle is shown here about forty years after the events took place, in a view published for inclusion in The continuation of Mr. Rapin's History of England; from the revolution to the present times. Oriented with north to the left, the image shows the Allied fleet in its approaches to the city and subsequent engagement with numerous French ships of the line, several of which are individually labeled. A key in the lower left identifies the various components of the engagement that are labeled within the view, including the amphibious invasion, destruction of Spanish galleons, and the march to Castle Rante. Sheet Width (in) 19.5 Sheet Height (in) 16 Condition Description A few small marginal tears along the outer edges, well away from the image. Features fine hand color.

Add to basketCondition: Fine. This descriptive battle plan approximates the course of events during the Battle of Ramillies, fought on May 23rd, 1706 between the forces of the Grand Alliance under the Duke of Marlborough against a combined Spanish/French army led by The Duke of Villeroi. Though the lines and squares can make this battle plan quite daunting, the helpful explanation in the lower right provides further context on the map's contents. The solid bars are the order of troops at the outset of the battle, occupying the dry ground between two rivers, near the town of Ramillies. The squares and hashed bars reflect the progress of battle, as the Allied cavalry turned the flank of the French infantry and pushed into retreat through the countryside. In just four hours, the French forces were routed, allowing the Allies to carry the offensive through the Spanish Netherlands and capture Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp the same year. The map was engraved by James Basire and published in the 1745 edition of Nicholas Tindal's translation of Paul de Rapin's 'History of England.' Sheet Width (in) 20.4 Sheet Height (in) 15.5 Condition Description Narrow upper margin, slightly toned, and a bit of wear to the outer edges. Creasing along vertical fold lines and some faint offsetting present, most visible in the white areas. Remains in very good condition, with nice modern hand color.
