The introduction says that one of the reasons for introducing these orations to the American public is that they are of such style and strength that American orators should learn from them. When first published in Europe the book went quickly through several editions, and that "no work issued in Europe for some years past, has been more extensively popular than these singular and powerful sketches, or 'Portraits,' as the Author more aptly entitles them.".
