Born in London in 1928, Tilson worked as a carpenter and joiner. After National Service in the RAF, he studied at St. Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He won the Rome Prize in 1955, and since then has spent much of his time in Italy. He has taught at important art schools in London, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, New York and Hamburg, and is a popular exhibitor at the Royal Academy's annual Summer Exhibition. This catalogue, illustrated in colour throughout and containing an essay by Mel Gooding, is published to accompany a major retrospective of Tilson's work at the Royal Academy of Arts." - Publisher.
