Three printed receipts, accomplished in manuscript, and signed by the Steward of Lincoln's Inn for collection of the Window Tax and other dues from the London lawyer, John Thomas Batt. The Steward, Thomas Grint, has witnessed the two receipts from 1781 with the 1783 receipt witnessed by 'J Rawson'. The wind…ow tax was introduced in 1696 and not repealed until 1851; the scars it caused in the form of bricked up apertures remain to this day. John Thomas Batt Esq' was a successful Wiltshire-based lawyer who was a friend and adviser to many of the most prominent families in late eighteenth century London, and a confidant to Edward Gibbon and James Harris the diplomat.
