'In this interesting little book a picture of Strabo is presented ( solely, be it noted, on the basis of Books III & IV of the 'Geography') as a writer of considerably more originality than the uncritical excerptor of earlier works (.) which he is customarily considered to be by most modern scholars. (.) According to Thollard, the key notion that underlies Strabo's work is the contrast between a less developed stage of human culture ('la barbarie') and a much more highly devoloped one ('la civilisation') brought about largely by the Romanisation of the ancient world. (.) T. argues persuasively in developing his thesis: he is properly dismissive of Lasserre's otiose invention of yet another unknown source for Strabo (.); his disagreements with Lasserre and Aujac on textual matters (.0 are fully justifiable; he rightly draws attention to the idea of human progress in the 'Geography' which is at offs with the otherwise Stoic background of the work (.); and he has sensible things to say about Strabo's use of Roman sources.'
