Add to basketTrade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 1976 Republication of 1940 Edition. 41 Pages. This is a 1976 Re-Publication of the 1940 Edition with a New Preface and Updated Biographical Notes. New Mexico and particularly Santa Fe, have long been focal points of interest in American history. The Indians, the Spaniards, Kearny, Fremont,…Garrard, Billy the Kid, Kit Carson, Sister of Charity Blandina, Bishop Lamy, Bill Williams, Bartlett, Emory, and hundreds of other early travelers and inhabitants, provided the warp and woof of an exceptionally rich tapestry. New Mexico was admitted in the Union in 1912 and the 1920 census lists the total number of inhabitants at 360,350. The same year, the population of New York State was 10,385,227. The new museum flourished and was the anchor of one of the most prolific and exciting manifestations of art in America. This book of 1940 was the best proof of the usefulness of the venture. It was the brainchild of Dr. Edgar L. Hewett, then director of the Museum of New Mexico. It has been out of print for years and when we look at it now, we have somewhat the same feeling of loving interest that we might have for our graduation year book.

Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm "high fidelity 360 sound" (mono) Columbia CL 892, near-mint vinyl in a good-only cardboard jacket with a strip of tape along top edge, still showing its small original "98" price tag. The back-up trombonists include Ur…bie Green and Jimmy Cleveland, bass trombonists Bart Varsalone and Tom Mitchell, with Hank Jones piano, Milt Hinton bass, and Osie Johnson drums. J.J Johnson and Kai Winding here introduce the trombonium, an upright valve trombone, as the octet offers Dizzy Gillespie's "Night in Tunisia," "The Continental," "You're My Thrill," and Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Surrey With the Fringe On Top," others. (Although small photo to bottom of rear panel surely indicates J.J. Johnson was of the African-American persuasion -- as we suspect Jimmy Cleveland was, as well -- Arnold Roth's art to front panel for some reason shows eight white guys. No one at Columbia could have picked up the phone and said "Yo, Arnie, looks great, but we need a few little adjustments, here"?) Reduced from $12. Cover art by Arnold Roth (illustrator).

Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm stereo vinyl record album, Doughboy X4RS-9226 / 1001, very-good-plus vinyl with a few scuffs in a very-good jacket which (though it's been opened) still wears its original shrink-wrap, although with dampstain to bottom left of… verso. In 1931 four young musicians who worked for Burrus Mills began playing an early morning radio show on a small radio station located in the Texas Hotel in Fort Worth. W. Lee O'Daniel, general manager of the flour mill, began announcing the program and originating it from the mil itself. The original Doughboys included Bob Wills, fiddle, and Milton Brown, vocals. From the early 1930s to the early 1950s, the Doughboys played a 15-minute program at 12:30 noon, five days a week, over a network of stations that covered Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and New Mexico. In 1936, the Doughboys traveled to Hollywood to appear with Gene Autry in his first musical cowboy movies for Republic Pictures, "Oh, Susannah" and "The Big Show." Cuts here include "A Fool Such As I," "Tennessee Waggoner," "San Antonio Rose," "When It's Round-Up Time in Heaven," and a Texas medley including "Red River Valley" and "Yellow Rose of Texas." Now reduced from $12.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. "An Introduction to the World's Greatest" ain't books but rather a boxed set of five, 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl jazz LP records, World's Greatest Music Series WGM(S)-2A, "from the catalogue of Roulette Records Birdland Series," the vinyl very-good-plus (no real p…roblems, but these records have been played), four of the five discs marked "Stereo," the box intact and "very good" with some edge rub and what's probably a sticker pull to bottom of rear panel. On the bright side, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis offer "Crazeology" and "Bird Feathers"; Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker bring us "School Days" and "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac"; Art Tatum offers "Dark Eyes"; the Stan Getz Quartet brings us "Hershey Bar"; we find Sonny Stitt with "Spinning" and "Hitsburg." Maynard Ferguson, Sarah Vaughan ("Stormy Weather") and Joe Williams each get a full disc to themselves, set of five now reduced from $12. For Maynard Ferguson fans we'll throw in OUR SECOND BOXED SET of two Roulette LPs, "The Maynard Ferguson Years," K-101, appear to be mono, very-good-plus vinyl in a "good" original 1965 box, including "Hip Twist," "Stella By Starlight," "Mambo La Mans" (sic), "The Party's Over," etc. -- that second boxed set being about a $4 value, the pair of boxed sets now reduced from $14.

Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm stereo vinyl instrumental rock 'n roll LP, identified to jacket as Liberty LST-8003, but to disc labels as United Artists Records LST-8003, near-mint vinyl in a near mint cardboard jacket (the boys showing off their stylish la…te-'60s hairstyles to BOTH front and back covers) which has been opened but still wears its original shrink-wrap. The lads offer jazz guitarist Johnny Smith's "Walk Don't Run" (of course), Bill Doggett's "Honky Tonk," Ellington's "Caravan," Santo & Johnny Farina's "Sleep Walk," Bill Justis' "Raunchy," even Max Steiner's "My Own True Love" (Tara's Theme)" -- plus a couple of originals. Obviously, this is not the Dolton 1960 original, nor even the Dolton 1963 re-release. There were actually two 1970 Liberty re-releases; this is the slightly more valuable one with a new back as well as a new front jacket cover. Why it bears tan "United Artists Records" labels displaying the Liberty catalog number we have no idea -- though admittedly they were both part of "Transamerica" by this point. (UA is generally reported to have issued Ventures product only from 1971 -- when the Liberty label went into eclipse -- through 1977. The Liberty label then resurfaced under new ownership in 1978, and officially supplanted UA under EMI ownership from 1980 to 1984 . . . for those who really care.) Reduced from $15.

The additional inscription "Have a good 77!" probably indicates a signing at or near New Year's, 1977. Opened in 1970 as the "Royal Inn," the ill-fated Vegas hotel-casino property on Convention Center Drive went through numerous owners and name changes including the Royal Americana (1980-1982), the Paddlewheel (1983-1993), the Debbie Reynolds (1993-1999), and the Greek Isles (2001-2009), finally being imploded as "The Clarion" on Feb. 10, 2015. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm stereo vinyl record album, Omega Records OSL-7, near-mint vinyl in a very-good cardboard jacket. Leon "Chaino" Johnson (1927-1999) was an American bongo player. After touring for several years on the Chitlin' Circ…uit, he released several albums and became popular with listeners of exotica music in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In the promotion of his albums, a fictional biography was developed, depicting Chaino as an orphan from a lost tribe in central Africa who had been rescued by missionaries after his tribe had been massacred. "The boy . . . quickly learned the ways of the white man, but never abandoned his native culture." Chaino was actually born in Philadelphia and raised in Chicago. In 1958, Chaino teamed up with record producer Kirby Allan; the pair released several albums in the late 1950s, the first being "Jungle Mating Rhythms," released by Verve Records in 1958. Chaino and Allan released five additional albums: Percussion for Playboys, Jungle Echoes, Night of the Spectre, Africana, and Temptation. The albums featured Chaino playing bongos, steel drums and other percussion instruments, combined with primal chants and "strains of grunting and howling" that Allan called "sensual primitive music" Seeking to capitalize on the popularity of the exotica genre, the liner notes for Chaino's albums built a mythology of Chaino as an orphan who was "the only survivor of a lost race of people from the wilds of the jungle in a remote part of central Africa where few white men have ever been." Chaino's music enjoyed renewed popularity in the late 1990s as part of the revival of interest in the exotica and ultra lounge genres. In his book, "Mondo Exotica," Francesco Adinolfi wrote that, in Chaino's albums, "exotica found its fullest expression: repeated, driving rhythms, savage cries, and tribal iconography intended to trigger the pagan fantasies of the listener." Reduced from $12. Cover photo, "Matusi Warrior," by George Pickow (illustrator).
