Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Limited Edition. Tiny wear to the corners of the front cover, slight mark to the rear cover. Front and rear pastedowns have offsetting from a previous dust jacket, no longer present.; William Makepeace Thackeray's (1811-1863) short story: a supposedly 'overheard' conversation by a Mr. Smith describing his forgoing a top class dinner to attend a friend's dinner in Hyde Park Gardens. The story lands the gentleman at his friend's house, finding that the friend had cancelled the dinner for 23 due to the birth of his 5th child. Humorous chaos ensues, the lady's maid will not allow the two men to leave for dinner at their club, Mr. Smith is soaked in the rain and cannot attend the top class dinner, he counts up the money and time the evening has cost him, and finds, after the fact, that he has been named godfather of the child. Told in Thackeray's witty, often scathingly satirical detail, it's a send up of the fumbling, yet aspiring, English not-quite-upper class. Not in the usual Thackeray cannon, this work first appeared in 1849 in the London periodical The Keepsake, then "probably less than a dozen" privately printed copies of an offprint. The work had not appeared in any of Thackeray's collected works or published separately until this edition from The Gadshill Club. With a Note about the book's history, a printer's device at the end of the Note. The first page of the story has a decorative head. One of a limited edition of 200, bound thus. "Arranged" and printed at the Bewick Press, Brooklyn, New York. This small 8vo book is 7 3/4" x 5 1/4" and 32 pp. In quarter brown cloth and brown, mouldmade paper over boards. Gilt title to front. Text block trimmed and gilt at the head, other edges untrimmed. Somewhat scarce among Thackeray editions, this appears to be the only book published by The Gadshill Club and the only book printed by Berwick Press. In quite clean, Very Good+ condition. Somewhat scarce.; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 32 pages.
