First Edition. 16mo (6 1/2" x 4 1/8"); original stiff tan wrappers with 12 medallions in "blue" [here: now apparently turned black] for each month on engraved cover; 12 full-page engraved illustrations by George Cruikshank, Albert Smith, Gilbert a'Beckett, the Brothers Mayhew, and Ricdum Funnidos [Thackeray]; 64 pages (including title) + [16] adverts. George Cruikshank (1792-1878)--sometimes called the "19th century Hogarth"--was one of the stars of British caricature and illustration during the first half of the nineteenth century. His illustrations for Dickens and early friendship with that author contributed greatly to the "Sparkler's" enormous success. One of the brilliant caricaturist-and-illustrator's finer productions. Nineteen annual booklets appeard from 1835 through 1858. Scarce in wrappers. This copy has various defects: the cover is soiled; pages are uniformly age-toned and most plates are without foxing, though many are waterstained (this principally affecting the verso of the plates, which remain quite enjoyable). Paper spine nearly abraided away; sewing holding by a thread. Lacks after the adverts., the 4pp. Prospectus of "The Naturalist's Library" & coloured specimen plate, so this copy may be an early state. The full-page engravings consist of: 1. Red cloth binding, decorative stamped in blind. 388, 428 pp. Illustrated thoughout in black and white by George Cruickshank and others, some fold-out. Clean, unmarked, light skew to boards. Near fine.

First Series 1835 - 1843 & Second Series 1844-1853. Numerous plates, some folding. Two volumes 8vo (7 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches), pages: 428 & 388. Contemporary half green calf over marbled boards, Spines gilt extra in 5 compartments with crimson lettering piece, all edges marbled. A little wear at headbands; overall well and attratively bound & in very good condition. Weight 1.8 kg thus extra overseas postage will be requested.
