First edition, first printing, introducing Caird's important 1880 treatise - expressing his commitment to Hegelian idealism and inclusive Christianity - to Chinese intellectuals. William Macklin (1860-1947), the co-translator, was a Canadian Missionary and a follower of Georgism. A two-page foreword is provided by the young intellectual Tao Lung Suen (Yan Weiqing, 1911-1997), although little is known about his connection to Macklin or how he came to be inolved in this project WorldCat records just five copies: Berkeley, University of Southern California, Princeton, University of Hong Kong, and National Library of China. Octavo. Text in Chinese. Original wrappers, gatherings sewn and glued into wrappers as issued, front cover lettered in Chinese in black within decorative black border, rear cover lettered in English in black. Housed in adjustable cream card archival box. Browned and brittle, occasional chipping to wrappers and contents: a very good copy of a delicate work.
