Summarized from the introduction by Maxwell Whiteman: Having lost the lower part of both legs at the 2nd B…attle of Bull Run in 1962, Corporal James Tanner learned to walk on artificial legs and eventually became a clerk in the War Department in 1864. It was his ability to take shorthand and the proximity of his residence to the scene of Abraham Lincoln's assassination that thrust Tanner into the midst of the events that followed the shooting at Ford's Theatre on the night of April 14, 1865.
