Some small smudges on the initial pages in the foreward and table of contents, clean after that. Includes 250 engravings by various artists, both black and white and many full color plates. Color plates are still birght and vivid, almost all still have their protective sheet of tissue. Color frontispiece has small tear in bottom margin, coming loose from binding at top. Front hinge is completely cracked; pages 417-432 have disengaged from binding (but are still held together as a subsection). Boards covered in greenish fabric elaborated embossed with gold, white and black imagery and titling. Worn to boards at corners, top and tail of spine. Edges are in surprisingly good condition, and while somewhat smudged and scuffed (most noticeable on back cover), exterior is not bad for the age of the item.
