This is a commemorative monograph that celebrates the unveiling and dedication of the General William Tecumseh Sherman Monument and the accompanying military parade in Washington, D.C. that took place on October 15, 1903. President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated the statue. After Sherman's passing, the Society of the Army of the Tennessee petitioned United States Congress to have a monument made to commemorate the late Union general. Congress agreed and established the Sherman Memorial Commission to oversee the project. The William T. Sherman statue was designed by Danish-American sculptor Carl Rohl-Smith (1848-1900) who was selected by the Sherman Memorial Commission. Sadly, Carl did not see the completed statue, but he finished the design for the pedestal before his death. Carl's widow, Sara Rohl-Smith, enlisted the help of other artists including Theo Kitson, Henry Kirke Bush-Brown, Jens Ferdinand Willumsen, Lauritz Jensen, Stephen Sinding, and Sigvald Asbjornsen to complete the statue's design and manufacture. Sara, too, designed parts of the Sherman statue. The Sherman statue is an equestrian statue that shows a stately depiction of Sherman riding on horseback. Carl intended for the statue to show Sherman when he led the Army of the Tennessee down Pennsylvania Avenue in May 1865. The Sherman statue still resides in its original location at the intersection of 15th Street, Pennsylvania Avenue, and Treasury Place in Sherman Plaza, Washington, D.C. This monograph includes many features relating to the Sherman statue and the military parade such as background information about the project, biographical sketches of Sherman and Carl Rohl-Smith, artistic features of the Sherman statue, and speeches by Roosevelt and other notable figures in attendance at the parade who paid tribute to Sherman. The following are some of titles of the Contents: "General Sherman Statue Committee," "Sherman Statue Commission," "Inception of the memorial," "Raising of funds," "Congressional Cooperation," "Invitation to sculptors," "Rules of competition," "Entries for competition," "The award," "Death of the sculptor," "Sherman Plaza," "Carl Rohl-Smith, sculptor," "Story of the Monument, by Mrs. Carl Rohl-Smith," "Inscriptions, emblems, and bas-reliefs on the pedestal," "The stands," "Flag decorations," "Floral display," "Tickets," "Police arrangements," "Carriage regulations," "Guests," "Seating of the guests," "Arrival of the President," "Parade formation," "Route of march," "The Unveiling Commission," "Order of exercises," "Introductory address--Review of the history of the statue by Maj. Gen. Grenville M. Dodge, chairman of the commission and presiding officer," "Sherman in Art," "The Unveiling," "The President's address," "Gen. D. B. Henderson's oration," "Gen. Daniel E. Sickles's address," "Gen. Charles H. Grosvenor's address," "Gen. Thomas J. Henderson's address," "Benediction," "Departure of the President," "Complimented by the President," "Committee on Reception," "Society of the Army of the Tennessee," "Society of the Army of the Cumberland," "Society of the Army of the Potomac," "Society of the Army of the Ohio," "The Aztec Society of 1847," "Grand Army of the Republic," and "Sherman: A memorial sketch by Deb.
