Soft cover. Condition: New. William Coldstream (illustrator). 1st Edition. This new copy is bound in illustrated card covers as issued. The contents are bright, tight, white and square. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Sir William Menzies Coldstream, CBE (28 February 1908 - 18 February 1987) was an English realist painter and a long-standing art teacher. Coldstream was committed to painting directly from life; he once remarked, "I lose interest unless I let myself be ruled by what I see".[19] His type of realism had its basis in careful measurement, carried out by the following method: standing before the subject to be painted, a brush is held upright at arm's length. With one eye closed, the artist can, by sliding a thumb up or down the brush handle, take the measure of an object or interval. This finding is compared against other objects or intervals, with the brush still kept at arm's length. Informed by such measurements, the artist can paint what the eye sees without the use of conventional perspective. The surfaces of Coldstream's paintings carry many small horizontal and vertical markings, where he recorded these coordinates so that they could be verified against reality. As a result of his painstaking methods, Coldstream worked slowly, often taking scores of sittings over several months to complete a work. His subjects include still-life, landscapes (usually centered on architecture), portraits, and the female nude. Ref L 1.

Paperback. Condition: Near fine. Book. 265 x 210 mm, 64 pp. in printed stapled wraps. Front cover image ('Portrait of Andree Dantu by Richard Hardwick: three phases of a Dantu polaroid light mobile') in colour, contents illustrated with both colour and b/w images. Three issues of Image (usually a 'careers' magazine for young graduates) were effectively taken over by important Cambridge academics of the day, all with a specific interest in concrete poetry and kinetic art: Philip Steadman, Stephen Bann and Reg Gadney. The issues of Image dedicated to kinetic and concrete poetry were particularly noteworthy for their commitment to translation and reprinting 'lost' texts, an imaginative use of layout and photography, and enlightening academic essays on their given subjects. This particular issue is entirely dedicated to kinetic art and concrete poetry (as the title suggests), and the editorial (which is idiosyncratically placed in the middle of the publication) reads: 'This issue of IMAGE is largely devoted to Kinetic Art: art, that is, incorporating real movement as opposed to the painted or static illusion of movement.' It is illustrated with a photograph of the editors and contributors - Stephen Bann, Reg Gadney, Frank Popper, Phil Steadman and Citroen - strolling through Paris. The issue features an essay by the concrete poetry specialist Stephen Bann, entitled 'Communication and Structure in Concrete Poetry', which comes with a reprinted letter from Ian Hamilton Finlay to Pierre Garnier, dated September 17th 1963. Translated by Bann are extracts from 'Manifesto for a new poetry, visual and phonic' by the concrete poet Pierre Garnier: 'The word is an element. / The word is a material. / The word is an object.' Also included in this section is a manifesto by Eugen Gomringer, entitled 'from line to consideration', and translated by Mike Weaver. It was 'first printed in augenblick no 2 agis verlag baden-baden 1954'. Works by Augusto de Campos, Ronaldo Azeredo, Decio Pignatari and Haraldo de Campos are also reprinted here. The second academic essay featured is a text by Mike Weaver entitled 'Concrete and Kinetic: the poem as Functional Object', which is illustrated with reproduced typestracts by Dom Sylvester Houedard. Also featured is a text by the editor Philip Steadman, entitled 'Colour Music and the Art of Lumia, and an essay by Reg Gadney entitled 'An Introduction: Kinetic Art', which is illustrated with images of works by Alexander Calder and Alexander Schoffer's Chronus sculptures. There are artist profiles of Frank Malina (by Reg Gadney); Gregoria Vardanega (by Stephen Bann); Martha Boto (by R.G); J-M. Cruxent (by S.B); Andree Dantu (by R.G); Knud Hvidberg and William Soya (by R.G); Nino Calos (by R.G). Condition: near fine (contents fine minor rubbing to covers).

Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Book. Rare complete run of Living Arts Magazine (3 issues published 1963-4),edited by Theo Crosby and John Bodley. Black & white printed in glossy wraps. Crosby associated himself with ICA in the early 60s and in 1963, under Croby's lead, the ICA exhibited Living Cities, to foreground the urban theories of the young Archigram group. The magazine therefore becomes an intrinsic part of the new international vision set out by Crosby and others, overlapping with other landmark publications of the era/movewment such as This Is Tomorrow, and Archigram. Autumn '60 for Ochestra by Cornelius Cardew, Photographs by Robert Freeman and Letter from the Airport by Carl Nesjar feature in Volume 1. Volume 2 includes : Sculptures and Statement by Peter Startup, Urbane Image by Richard Hamilton and Living City by Peter Cook, Dennis Compton et al. Volume 3 includes THe Allegorical Situation by Bernard Cohen, David Sylvester interviewing David Smith, Communication and Symbolic Value by Gillo Dorfles, THe Atavism of the Short-Distance Minicyclist by Reyner Banham and review of Living City by Robert Maxwell. The 50 page Living City section of Volume 2 includes THE EXHIBITION - EXPERIENCE 19 JUNE - 2 AUGUST 1963 described and expanded by it's designers, with Manifesto, Introduction & ket to the numerous pages of illustrations, design and texts. Amongst the many contributions are THE KEY TO THE VITALITY OF THE CITY by Peter Cook, CITY SYNTHESIS by Dennis Crompton, Total Exhibition Structure, MOVEMENT GLOOP, and FINAL NOTES ON THE LIVING CITY. Condition - the plastic cover tends to bubble. A fault uniform in all copies (& apparent in all 9 copies of issue 2 exhibited in Tate Modern Hamilton retrospective, 2014). These copies have some of that bubble effect but are the best I have seen with only a little near spine. Each rubber stamped neatly on colophon page "Michael Farr (Design Integration) 97 Jerymn Street London " (a prestigious London design company). Slight wear to issue 1 cover. General minor handling. Copies are prone to curling of covers due to plastic overlay, but being housed in a homemade cardboard slipcase these copies are better than usual. Minor rubbing to colophon pages (from inside flap printed image). Very difficult to find a set in this kind of condition. VG++/ near fine.
