(New York: Henry J. Wehman 108 Park Row, New York nd 1890s?). A 19th Century Softback. Rare. 32 pp. Rarely seen (only a few copies have been sold at auction over the last 100 years). Occasional Illustrations in the text. Cover price 15 cents. A very good copy. Part 1 covers boxing; Part 2 covers wrestling. Owen Swift (1814 9 June 1879) was a British bare-knuckle prize fighter, who killed three men in boxing bouts. The death of "Brighton Bill" in one particularly savage 85-round bout in 1838, and Swift's subsequent conviction for manslaughter, led to the adoption of the London Prize Ring Rules He was regarded as one of the most brilliant fighters of his day, losing only twice in his storied career. Originally printed in 1853 this appears to be an 1890s re-issue. Teaches the art of boxing (and correct pugilistic attitudes) without a master. Further photographs available upon request. £210.
