Fingendosi anch'egli astrologo (con il nome di Bickerstaff), Swift rivolge i propri strali contro il famoso John Partridge - specializzato nel predire la morte di sovrani e uomini comuni - del quale profetizza a sua volta la morte con argomenti tanto grotteschi quanto efficaci, espressi nello stile tipico degli astrologi suoi contemporanei.
