Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Illustrated by Lynd Ward (illustrator). reprint. Color and b&w plates; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 46 pages; Circa [1963] William Morrow. Royal octavo HC/DJ. Though 1947 is the only date recorded on the copyright, I believe this copy likely to have been printed in the mid 1960's during the Civil Rights struggle. In the first consideration the book just does not feel like a 1947 printing. I note that the first edition was issued in black cloth with a pictorial panel tipped on the cover board. This copy is in yellow cloth with no pictorial panel. This copy comes from the collection of a 1950's- 1980's children's librarian, who chiefly sourced her collector books as extras purchased with her private funds in the library order. There is no Worldcat record of a 1960's reissue, likely because the title does not have any reference to being a reissue. My supposition is that there was a call for the book among school libraries during the Civil Rights era and the publisher accommodated the demand but without a trade edition. This particular copy is superb, tight, bright and fresh in a crisp edged and uniformly bright pictorial dust jacket. The jacket is not priced on the front flap. Illustrated throughout with color toned and b&w drawings from the art of Lynd Ward. A few superficial imperfections to the jacket but overall about as new. F/NF.

Near fine in dark blue cloth-covered boards with shelfwear on the top edge and a fair dust jacket with chips on the spine and a clean separation along the front hinge. This is a review copy with the publisher's slip laid in with a letter from the publisher addressed to Mrs. Miller and signed by Elizabeth B. Hamilton from Morrow and a glossy photograph of one of Ward's lithographs. The book is stamped "Horn Book" twice on the front endpaper, no doubt indicating the publication that received the letter and review copy.
