Wm Blackwood & Sons Ltd, Edinburgh. 1926 First edition 360pp Illustrated Hardback This book is a bit of a publishing curiousity in that it was first published 64 years after the author's deat…h as an unfinished work. Surtees, as with all his works, submitted the first seven chapters to the editor of 'Punch' for serialisation but he was told that, in its present form it would prove to be too long and he was asked politely if he could not make some reductions. Surtees took umbrage at this suggestion and later offered it to Colburn's 'New Monthly Magazine' which was edited by Harrison Ainsworth who like the story very much and fully intended to serialise it but pressed for the concluding chapters. He then advertised the forthcoming serialisation and named Surtees as the author despite the fact that Surtees had asked for this, as with all his other books, to be published anonymously. Ainsworth, it seems, lost patience with the author and indicated that he had had enough of this matter and though a series of short, acrimonious letters (reprinted in the back of this book) withdrew his offer to serialise the book. And so it remains an enigma. Surtees went on to write four more works of fiction but he never returned to Young Tom Hall although some of the characters he introduces in this book were to appear in 'Ask Mamma' and 'Plain or Ringlets'. There are four full page colour plates and twelve black and white plates by the well known equestrian artist George Denholm Armour. This copy is bound in scarlet skivertex with black and gilt titling and decoration. There is a neat inscription from a previous owner to the front paste down and some mild foxing to the prelims but this does not affect the text or the illustrations Ref O2.
