India is blessed with varied agro climate abundance of agricultural wastes and manpower making it most suitable for the cultivation of all types of temperate subtropical and tropical mushrooms. It is estimated that about 170 million tonnes of crops residues are left unused for burning out of which even one per cent of their utilization for the production of mushrooms can make India as one of the major mushroom producing country of the world. Though mushroom production in India started in 1961 but it is only after 1990 that India made some noticeable progress. The technology of mushroom production has advanced dramatically over the past few years in most advanced countries of the world. However in India were majority of the mushroom holding are either lacking proper environmental control facilities or do not have adequate compost preparation and pasteurization facilities development of various pests and diseases sufficiently to a level to run the industry can not be overruled. Further with the trend towards intensification and continuous cropping pests and pathogens can easily establish if attention is not given to hygiene proper pasteurization and exact cropping parameters. The mushroom growers must always be aware of these dangers and it is very important for them to recognize the first signs of any disorder with correct identification and the application of existing knowledge so that these disorders could be successfully treated. The book is intended to provide knowledge of pests and pathogens to all those who are associated with mushroom production so that by careful observation and description of the disorders it could be possible to make an identification and then apply the appropriate measures to combat the problem. Effort has been made to highlight the importance of hygiene during mushroom cultivation so that production level achieved during the first year could be maintained by avoiding site contamination phenomenon. Most of the mushroom growers mistake first year success guaranteed for the following years which generally lead to the development of pests and harmful micro flora sufficiently enough to result in considerable economic loss. Control of pests and pathogens should be accomplished by a combination of all the methods available like cultural physical genetic biological and chemical. Chemicals however may be used as the last resort keeping in view the nature of the crop and residual toxicity. Mushroom crop is ideally suited to the use of bio control technology and there have been considerable developments in this field. It seems likely that in the future we may see advances in the use of biological agents which may ultimately replace pesticides as the growers main weapon in the fight against pests and pathogens. Attempt has been made to integrate all these approaches and to present a logical and analytical approach to the control of mushroom problems. It is generally realized that there is an acute shortage of literature on mushroom cultivation especially regarding management of pests and diseases based on the requirements of the growers in our country. The present book covered all aspects on the identification and management of competitors pathogens and pests in simple language. It is often very difficult to fulfill the expectations of different sections of the community (mushroom growers and researchers) but continued efforts to have a judicious blending of the needs of the community would be our endeavor in future. 212 pp.

Risk and Risk Management in Rainfed Agriculture. 21. A Pilot Project in Andhra Pradesh Agricultural Risk Management. Weather forecasts are probabilities and projections based on improved technologies but not reachable to many small and marginal farmers. But still vast majority of the people in the country continue in farming with a hope that they would get better production and better prices. Agriculture continues to play a major role, in spite of declining share in India's overall economy. Even today, as we entered the new millennium, the situation is still the same, with almost the entire economy being sustained by agriculture, which is the mainstay of the villages. Although agriculture contributes less than 15% of India's GDP, its importance in the country's' economic, social and political fabric goes well beyond this indicator. The rural areas are still home to 75 percent of the India's 1.2 billion people, a large number of whom are poor. Most of the rural poor depend on rain-fed agriculture and fragile forests for their livelihoods. Agricultural risk is associated with negative outcomes that stem from imperfectly predictable climatic and price variables. Weather and climate are major risks and uncertainty factors impacting agriculture production. Market risk is due accessibility of inputs, uncertainty of prices in buying inputs, selling farm output, dairy and livestock products etc. Risk management is very critical to the success of agriculture, and yet there is a lack of tools used to manage risk as well as a lack of understanding of the tools themselves. Though, risk is an integral part of agriculture and farmers make risky decisions every day and confront different types of risk, changes in the risk environment and available tools to manage the risk make it a compelling reason to engage in risk management education. This volume is outcome of selected papers presented at the National Seminar on "Agricultural Risk Management" organized during 3-4 January 2014 by Centre for Good Governance (CGG) in association with National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRD&PR).

It is generally realized that there is an acute shortage of literature on mushroom cultivation based on the requirements of the growers in our country. Therefore the present book has been written keeping those factors in view and the book shows a great variety of cheap and useless materials e.g. agricultural industrial and forest waste that can be successfully used as media for growing the various edible mushrooms. The book emphasizes mainly on the applied (cultivation) aspect of edible mushroom and is intended for anyone who is interested in edible mushroom the experience mushroom specialists seasonal commercial grower or simply layman. The aim of writing this book is that it will encourage and stimulate further research on all aspects of edible mushroom with special attention directed towards discovering new edible species and improving both the quality and yield of existing ones. This would eventually lead to their mass production accompanied by reduction in cost ultimately bringing this commodity with in the reach of common man. 180 pp.

In India about 72 76% of human population lives in about 6 00 000 villages and is mainly engaged in agricultural and allied activities. Recently a lot of emphasis is being given to agro based industries due to advantages of rural employment generation and gainful utilization of natural and farm resources. Large quantities of renewable lignocellulosic residues are generated every year as a result of extensive agriculture practices. Their direct use as food is non existent. Mushroom on the other hand have the ability to transform nutritionally useless waste in highly acceptable nutritious food. They have the ability to degrade lignin along with cellulose and hemicellulose. In addition the cultivation of mushrooms is labour intensive and provides opportunities to the landless labourers weaker section of the society in our country. Mushroom industry in India is developing fast especially cultivation of white button mushrooms. During the last decade the production has increased in India by 5 fold and present mushroom production is about 50 000 tons of all types of mushrooms. Out of these about 10% are mushrooms other than the button mushrooms. At the current rate of growth of mushroom production in the country it is projected that mushroom production will cross 6 lakh tones by 2020. Mushroom has potential for providing adequate employment opportunity to the landless labourer women and the educated unemployed. Inspite of all the advantages of mushroom cultivation viz. its nutritional and medicinal value and the employment opportunities mushroom cultivation generates it is generally realized that there is an acute shortage of literature on mushroom cultivation based on the requirements of the growers in our country. The present book emphasizes both the biological as well as applied aspects of edible mushrooms in very simple language. It is often difficult to fulfill the aspiration and expectations of various section (researchers and growers) but continued efforts to have a judicious blending of the needs of both the section would be our endeavour in future. 349 pp.
