Walker, Dugald Stewart (illustrator). 176 pp, + finis Aged but still attractive showing of this children's classic by an Irish man of letters. This is a later (2nd?) printing dated (TP) 1923. Copyright page: 1918. G only. Nevertheless, showy, decorated top board and spine very well preserved. Edges tanned, lightly foxed; EPs toned. Whimsical bookplate, front paste-down. Within, general tanning; however, binding quite sound and pages unmarked. Brittle and fragmented DJ has been laid into a mylar jacket cover. See photos. Colum wrote many books for children and is also remembered as a founder of Dublin's Abbey Theater and a close associate of WB Yeats and James Joyce. Dugald Stewart Walker was born in Richmond, VA, and trained in New York. He was praised in his day for the steady hand and rich detail of his numerous illustrations. His Modern Style work will call to mind other master-illustrators of the period, such as Rackham and Beardsley. "The thirteen little wrens sat on the Apple-yard wall in the King's Garden and their mother was there to teach them to fly. One called them the little wrens, but really each one was as big as their mother. She had a tail, however, that was most cunningly cocked and they had no tails, and the consequence was that when they made their little flights they always went sideways" (51).
