Second printing: octavo; hardcover, quarter-bound in cloth with gilt spine titles and upper board decoration; 464pp., untrimmed, top edges dyed green, with 16pp. of monochrome plates. Moderate wear; slightly shaken; spine extremities softened; text block edges toned and top edge dusted; previous owner's name in ink to the flyleaf. Dustwrapper toned with some rubbing and edgewear; chipping to the flap-turns and spine panel with some loss of text; some light marks and stains; now backed by archival-quality white paper and professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front flyleaf, "To.T. H. Williams / in the hope that you will find something of interest herein, and with my warm regard. / Marshal Stearns / February 1933". One illustration on page [6]. Hunting memories from this Connecticut author (who once bought a hunting dog from North Carolina). Memories of Bird Dogs, Birds, and other hunters and guides. Stearns had kennels in various states, including Florida. He also talks of hunting in Virginia, "over a neighboring plantation to Mr. Cabell's". Part of Chapter 8 is devoted to "Sport", the dog he got from North Carolina (we don't' know if he went shooting in NC). Sport was supposed to be a bird dog but had a tendency to go for fur rather than feather. Signed by Author(s).

Author's second book dealing with his sporting interests which include fishing for trout and hunting grouse, especially at his beloved Marshepaug Club in Connecticut. Book in VG condition with spine titles faded as usual, small chip upper front free endsheet along with faint fold to same o/w internally clean. All of Stearn's books are hard-to-find.

The final (of three) Stearns' titles dealing with his sporting life. Tales of grouse shooting, bird dogs, fly fishing for trout plus salmon fishing with Richard Carley Hunt. With a large and interesting section entitled " Maine Guides I Have Known". This volume is the hardest-to-find of the three as the OCLC locates but 5 copies. Spine titles lightly faded as usual, some wear to spine ends, 1 page corner turned o/w a solid VG copy.

Stearns' reminiscences of sport afield. Gunning for grouse and woodcock in New England, shooting quail in Florida, bird dogs and numerous incidents of fly fishing for trout and salmon. The first of eventually three books penned about his sporting interests. This copy in VG condition and bears a signed presentation on the front free endpaper to Philadelphia railroad magnate Charles T. Ellis. Uncommon in the variant brown cloth binding.
