Paperback. Condition: Good. After enjoying exceptional growth at the turn of the last century, Cleveland's fortunes, like that of many metropolitan centers, have sharply declined. How much of this change is due to characteristics of growth and development, the outmigration of population and investment' technological advances, and the changing racial composition of the population? On the eve of its bicentennial, Cleveland serves as a paradigm of American urbanization by providing lessons regarding urban America, our communities, and ourselves. Cleveland, A Metropolitan Reader emphasizes the political economy, social development, and history of Cleveland from 1796 to the present. One of the oldest communities in the United States, it is constantly remaking itself-serving as a model of innovative transformation for other industrial cities. The contributors to this volume, many of whom are contemporary urban scholars, address current issues through an interdisciplinary collection of essays. Also included are commentaries written by the leaders of Cleveland-those now actively working to transform the city. Although each has its own topic, all the essays examine ways in which technological restructuring and social relationships interact to generate a distinctively American set of urban problems. The authors of these essays do not necessarily agree on the nature of Cleveland's problems or on appropriate solutions, but together they provide a broad perspective on the reality of a great city's growth, decline, and reinvention. An ideal book for introductory urban studies courses, Cleveland, A Metropolitan Reader will be of interest to scholars of urban studies, urban planning, history, and politics as well as to those generally interested in Cleveland, the Midwest, and the broad range of challenges facing most American cities as we enter the 21st century.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Nicknamed ""the Blonde Borgia,"" Anna Marie Hahn was a cold-blooded serial killer who preyed on the elderly in Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine district in the 1930s. When the State of Ohio strapped its first woman into the electric chair, Hahn gained a place in the annals of crime as the nation's first female serial killer to be executed in the chair. Told here for the first time in riveting detail is Anna Marie's gripping story, an almost unbelievable tale of multiple murders, deceit, and greed. Born in Bavaria in 1906, Anna Marie brought shame to her pious family when, as a teenager, she gave birth to an illegitimate son, Oscar. She was shipped off to America in 1929 where she initially lived with elderly relatives in Cincinnati. A year later, she married Philip Hahn, a Western Union telegrapher, with whom she bought a new house and opened a delicatessen/bakery. Pressed economically by the Great Depression, the ever-resourceful, Anna Marie found other ways to get the money to support her passionate pasttime - betting on horses. She tried burning down the house, then the deli, for the insurance; and she tried killing her husband, also for the insurance. Then, she took to befriending the neighborhood elderly, latching on to their life savings before feeding them arsenic with deadly results. For weeks, her Cincinnati trial for ""the greatest mass murder in the history of the country"" was a front-page sensation across the nation. A thousand or more curiosity seekers came daily to the court-house to try to get just a glimpse of her. Nearly 100 witnesses gave damning testimony against her, and the jury's guilty verdict put her on the path to the electric chair. Finally, after a year, all appeals were exhausted, and Anna Marie, age 32, was executed on December 7, 1938, at the state penitentiary in Columbus. True crime buffs, historians, legal professionals, and others seeking an extraordinary story will find ""The Goodbye Door"" a compelling addition to true crime literature.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In 1989 a political fire storm erupted after the United States Supreme Court declared that dissidents had the constitutional right under the First Amendment to burn the flag. To some, including President George Bush and many members of Congress, the flag was a sacred symbol of American freedoms. They believed its physical destruction posed a serious threat to the country and demanded a constitutional amendment to reverse the Court's decision. For those who defended the Court's ruling, flag desecration was a form of constitutionally protected free speech, and any attempt to forbid such conduct was seen as creating a dangerous precedent. Burning the Flag brings together the disciplines of law, journalism, political science, and history to explain and place the development of the controversy in its full context. It is based on extensive research in legal, congressional, and journalistic sources and on exclusive interviews with nearly 100 of the key players in the dispute, among them flag burners, judges, lawyers and lobbyists on both sides, members of Congress, congressional aides, and journalists. A timely addendum chronicles the late 1995 attempts once again to pass a constitutional amendment on flag desecration, adding to the significance of this readable account. Burning the Flag will be of value to both an academic and a general audience, particularly to civil libertarians, flag buffs, and those interested in popular media, American politics, modern American history, and constitutional law.…

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. A new novel from the author of The House of God Samuel Shema??s classic novel about medical internship, The House of God, is required reading in medical schools throughout the world and is celebrated for its authentic description of medical training and practice, for its Rabelaisian comedy, and for its humanism and vision. His new novel, and most ambitious work yet, The Spirit of the Place, tells the story of an expatriate doctor called home to Columbia, New York, in the early 1980s to face his own history and that of the place. It is a novel of love and death, mothers and sons, ghosts and bullies, doctors and patients, illness and healing. Settled into a passionate relationship with an Italian yoga instructor and happily working in a European spa, Dr. Orville Rosea??s newfound peace is shattered by a telegram informing him of his mothera??s death. On his return to Columbia, a Hudson River town of quirky people and a??plagued by breakage,a?? he learns that his mother has willed him a large sum of money, her 1981 Chrysler, and her Victorian house in the center of town. But therea??s a catch: he must live in her house continuously for a year and thirteen days. As he struggles with his decisiona??whether to stay and meet the terms of the will or return to his love and life in Italya??Orville reconnects with Bill Starbuck, the town doctor who mentored a young Orville and who practices a long-ago kind of medicine that treats the working poor, people neglected and forgotten by the medical and insurance industries. Now in his seventies, and in need of help with the practice, Bill convinces Orville to stay. During the course of his year and thirteen days, Orville reacquaints himself with Columbia and Columbians. He reunites with his sister and niece and comes to terms with old rivals and bitter memories. And he doctors a community in desperate need of care. He also meets Miranda Braak, a remarkable young single mother who aspires to be the town historian. Her knowledge of and reverence for the past challenges Orville to examine his own history, and her courage, integrity, and love challenge him to grow. In this story filled with wit, pointed insight, and drama, Orville learns what it means to be a healer, and to be healed. The Spirit of the Place is Shem at his finesta??compassionate, capacious, funny, full of big ideas and memorable personalities. It offers an authentic, unvarnished portrait of the medical profession and underscores the crucial link between the health of individuals and the health of communities.…
