Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Gorgeous racing cloth bound, hardback book, with gilt titles on the spine and decorative fish gilt design on front board. Comes with dust jacket. This wonderful book is in really nice condition, normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. Unfortunately when removin…g the jacket, there is mark on the bottom left of front board, reaching across the base spine to right side of base of back board, when looking at the inside of the jacket there must have been some moisture between the jacket the the cloth bound book, its hardly noticeable and could probably be cleaned by a specialist book binder very easily, and I only thought it appropriate to mention, so as not to receive any undue surprises when purchasing the book. I can assure that this has not affected the papers at all, which are clean and all intact. 312 pages, and all pages, text and illustrations are in super good, clean, readable order. Published in 1976 in Great Britain, First Edition, Filmset by Keyspools Ltd, Lancashire, Printed by Lund Humphries Ltd, Bradford, England. Introduction by Henry Geldzahler. Signed by David Hockney himself on title page. What makes this book so fascinating is not only that the entire text is by Hockney himself - so that his life-story is given maximum documentation - but also that it reproduces almost all his paintings and graphic work to date, as well as many of his drawings. In this respect, the book amounts to an oeuvre catalogue, although its structure follows the narrative of Hockney's text and is relatively informal. The story, presented in more or less chronological form, is informative and humorous, full of description of his work, anecdotes about himself, and other artists and friends, his thoughts about art, and ambiguous relationship with abstract and other current art styles. Above all, it is the story not so much of someone who has achieved something and who is happy to rest there, but an artist who is ceaselessly striving to improve his art, and to learn how to interpret the world around him through his artistry and imagination.
